Pack a Sombrero

My sister leaves, on vacation, for Mexico on Monday.

What better time to talk about, in this Summer of Exasperation (see: Runner getting picked off 2nd base with hottest hitter up), than Golden Sombreros?

* In Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Yankees, Carlos Beltran recorded the 66th regular season Golden Sombrero (4 plate appearances, 4 strikeouts) in Mets history.

* It was the Mets first Golden Sombrero since August 22, 2007 (Lastings Milledge, Padres) and Beltran's first Golden Sombrero as a Met.

* Beltran is the second Met with a Golden Sombrero against the Yankees joining Carlos Delgado (June 15, 2007).

* Beltran is the first Mets centerfielder with a Golden Sombrero since Ryan Thompson (April 17, 1994, Astros).

Carlos Beltran 2008
Ryan Thompson 1994
Mookie Wilson 1987
Mookie Wilson 1981 (twice!)
Tommie Agee 1971
Ron Swoboda 1965

* Beltran does not have to worry much about breaking the Mets record for Golden Sombreros any time in the near future.

Most Golden Sombreros
Mets History

6- Jerry Koosman
5- Gary Gentry
4- Mookie Wilson
3- Ron Swoboda
3- Dave Kingman

* The record for most Golden Sombreros AGAINST the Mets is 3, by Bobby Bonds. Mets opponents have only registered 45 Golden Sombreros.

Most Golden Sombreros
vs Mets, All-Time

3- Bobby Bonds
2- Nate Colbert
2- Dave Adlesh

(for those never having heard of Dave Adlesh...He played 106 games for the Astros from 1963 to 1968 and hit .168 with 80 strikeouts in 256 AB.)

* 3 Mets have managed Platinum Sombreros (5 plate appearances, 5 strikeouts).

Ron Swoboda 1969

True Metbreros know...The only batter to record a Platinum Sombrero against the Mets was Delino Deshields in 1991.

The level of detail and information on this site just blows me away!

At least one of those Beltran Ks was looking. I wonder if he's going to get squeezed the rest of the season after his role in the spat with the umpire.
